| Greetings from Ikegami Junior High School! |
I hope this year's teaching is going well for all of you. Since this is my first year as an ALT, I must admit I was a bit nervous meeting all the teachers, staff and students on my first day. However, the English Department teachers -Mr. Takei, Mr. Maruyama, Ms. Kawahara, Mr. Takenoshita and Ms. Tokugasaki --are all kind and supportive. I consider myself fortunate to be assigned to this school because the faculty and staff are very helpful and friendly.
Teaching English at Ikegami is both challenging and exciting. I believe
that interactive communicative activities are very effective ways to motivate
students to actively participate and to successfully learn English. That's
why I try to create lesson plans using group and pair communicative activities.
I'm glad to say that all the JTEs are very supportive of this style of
teaching.
I must admit it is sometimes difficult to come up with communicative
activities that are suitable for the different levels of the students.
However, there are many sources for ideas. You can get ideas from the many
ESL websites. There are also many books for grammar activities such as
"Edutainment -How to teach Language with Fun and Games by Hewitt,
Grammar Games by Rinvolucri and Five-minute Activities by Penny Ur.
I also believe students should be provided with the opportunities for natural language use. One method to teach, which I recently found to be effective, is to introduce a useful expression or a simple idiom at the start of each class. This works well as a warm-up activity for second and third grade JHS. The expressions taught are in addition to the phrases they have learned during their first grade. For useful expressions, I teach short phrases that they can use as a normal part of classroom routines such as "Sure. Here you are," Once more, please," How do you say ____in English?" "I'm sorry, I don't understand," and "How do you spell ____?" This short exercise not only encourages them to use English in their daily school activities, but it also gives them confidence to communicate in English.
I hope this idea serves you well and I wish you good luck and good teaching.
Also, since the Christmas season is just around the corner, I wish everyone
a joyful holiday season. May you spend it with the people who mean the
most to you.
