Ohtsu Junior High School

Ohtsu Junior High School

Hello everyone. I hope you are doing well. I am currently working at Ohtsu Junior High School for the second year. Last year, Ohtsu was my secondary school. The entire staff here has been wonderful. All of the teachers, not just the English teachers, are very comfortable communicating with me. Most of the time they bring notes from home and we have small discussions about their chosen topic. It’s so funny. I think this is also a great way for me to study upon my lack of Japanese. I hate to leave this school, but unfortunately, this will be my last year.

I have recently taken over Mr. Valko’s position as the English Club teacher. The English Club is an after school activity for those who are interested. I found this task to be difficult at first because, of all the 8 students in the club, ALL of them are at different levels. We meet maybe two or three times a month. During the first month, most of the students found the lessons too difficult and a few found them too easy. So, what I do now is play games with them. Most of the game ideas come from you guys, when we meet last May, so Thank You. One of the more popular games in the club is a game called “Guess Who” that I picked up at the Navy Exchange. I find it to be a little challenging for the students at first, but they pick it up real quick. This game gives the students the opportunity to ask questions rather than answer them all the time. They love it.

On another note, on September 18th was our Junior High School Sports Day Festival. My family and I went to enjoy the games. We really did enjoy them. If you haven’t been able to see a Sports Day, you’re missing out on a good time. The teachers and students were very happy just to see my face on a Saturday and to meet the family I talk so much about. Some students even pulled me to the side to meet their parents. It was so funny to see the students act like the energetic kids they are outside of the classroom.

So far, teaching with the Yokosuka City Board of Education has been a wonderful experience. I know that I will NEVER find another job as fun and fulfilling as this. I will enjoy the rest of the year teaching here and leave with a lot of new pen pals. Well, HAVE FUN.
