As a new ALT, I am happy for the opportunity to interact with the teachers
and students at Kuguo Junior High School. The staff has been very welcoming
and encouraging.
In the classroom, I find that role playing and interactive demonstrations
are a very effective means of keeping all the students involved and successful.
I am happy to say that most of the lessons use many listening, speaking
activities, as well as reading and writing. Group work and partnering for
oral practice is standard.
One of the most successful lessons (planned by the 3rd grade JET) was a
reverse “show and tell” Each of the four classes divided into groups.
The object was to work together to make an English presentation to me as
the ‘student’, about something Japanese. Over a two week period, the
students picked their topics and gathered items for their presentation.
On the appointed day, I sat in a student desk in the center of the room.
One by one each group explained to me about Japanese chess, how to make
green tea, when and how to wear a yukata, how to play a Japanese flute,
Judo, holidays, foods….. Each student had a speaking part. My job was
to respond in English, asking questions and making comments. I learned
a lot and the students were proud to show me about Japan.
