Greetings from Ohgusu Junior High School! As a new full-time Foreign
English Teacher in the Yokosuka City school system, my experience has been
exciting, and initially exhausting. The transition from part-time to full-time
(and the challenge with Japanese teachers’ meetings!) took a few weeks
(or more) of adjustment. I no sooner felt like I was “getting in sync”
when I experienced my first overnight field trip with the 7th grade class.
I found a new level of exhaustion after the first day’s adventures ended
with the teachers’ meeting at 11:00 PM! It was, however, a wonderful experience
and I felt closer to my students. Also, my admiration for my Japanese teachers
soared!
I was impressed with the organization of this event. The attention to
time and detail was amazing! Our 108 students walked about 5 miles (in
assigned groups of about 5-6 students) from school to the Miura Fureai
Center and they did it without adult accompaniment! They had checkpoints
along the route and we had a few stragglers and wrong turns but, in the
end, they all made it on time! The day’s events included classes, exploration,
cooking (curry rice) and clean-up and by 10:30, they were all in bed. The
next day’s 6AM rising was more challenging for some, but they were all
troopers. Clean-up, classes and lunch preparations (yaki soba) finished
up the outing at the center. Their walk back towards school at the end
of this field trip proved to be more determined with “record setting”
speed (I think they were anxious to head home and sleep---I know that I
was!). It was a beneficial learning experience for me, as well as the students!
I am challenged by this teaching opportunity and thoroughly enjoying my students and school. I can see the positive influence of being full-time, providing the students with more frequent English exposure and increasing their comfort levels in hearing and speaking English. The challenge of creating more interesting lesson plans to increase student motivation to study English and the challenge of improving and maximizing the effectiveness of a team-teaching approach are ever-present on my mind. Admittedly, I am looking forward to the summer “break” (Japanese teachers work during the summer holiday) to hopefully have more time to organize my thoughts into a more-detailed plan and to enjoy some extra-curricular studies with my students. We have remedial tutoring, advanced studies, certification studies, and cooking in English planned! It should be fun!
Enjoy your summer holidays!
