AN ENGLISH CLASS IN THE COMPUTER ROOM

This is the first time that I have written about an idea before doing it myself, but the idea so enthralls me that I thought now would be an appropriate time to share it with all of the other Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs). This is not my own idea. Instead, it is that of an accomplished Japanese English Teacher (JET) now teaching second grade English students at a private junior high school in Osaka. Her idea allows English students to spend an entire hour of class in the computer room, where each student used a computer to study English at their own pace from an American children’s English CD-ROM procured by the school. This JET, in company with her ALT, used an English CD-ROM featuring Peanuts Cartoon characters such as Charlie Brown and Snoopy. Of course the students thoroughly enjoyed themselves for the 50 minutes allocated for the class. When the bell rang, they clamored for more study time with the computer! During the class, the JET and the ALT acted as mere facilitators, answering questions as necessary, but primarily keeping out of the way so the students could learn English by themselves at their own pace. The students were especially attracted to the game playing section of the CD-ROM. The students were provided with a task sheet to document their progress through the CD-ROM. Of special note is that many sections of the CD-ROM were audio enhanced, allowing the students to listen to and pronounce the vocabulary that was displayed on the monitor. Also important to note is that none of the material on the CD-ROM correlated with the student’s progress in the textbook?this was a fun English class, the content of which was not tested later. Can such a class be initiated by the ALT at a Yokosuka Public Junior High School? Sure, why not? I am going to try this idea at Mabori Junior High School. My plan broadly follows: discuss the idea with the school’s JET’s, have the school buy the American children’s English CD-ROM I recommend, have the school’s computer systems administrator install the CD-ROM on the LAN in the computer room, learn how to navigate the CD-ROM with in company with the JET’s, create a student task sheet, schedule the computer room for the English students, and have fun! If you figure a way to do this more efficiently, please let me know. Wish me luck!
